Take a deep dive into the past and uncover the history of Edinburgh with local tour guide and historian, Ruth Boreham
I love showing people the history and the wonder of the places around them, bringing to life stories from the past, whether this is through a history or ghost tour.
I have tried to make sure there is little crossover in the women discussed so you could also come on all 4 and hear something different on each one!
I can often be found giving talks on different topics to groups and societies, both in person and online. Here are the list of some of talks I do most regularly:
I have had a fascination with Mary Somerville (1780-1872) ever since reading a letter she wrote to publisher John Murray.
It was a mixture of business and exchanging gossip! Since then I have been researching about her when time has allowed, spending many happy hours in the Bodleian Library in Oxford
I have provided workshops for the National Library of Scotland, BBC Radio Scotland and John Gray Centre in Haddington, both on site and at schools.
Topics include; World War One, Mary Queen of Scots, Victorians and Jekyll & Hyde.
I now have 4 different Women’s History Walking Tours on offer!
So much to discover – why not come and join me on one?
After obtaining a history degree from Leicester University in 2002, I moved to Edinburgh.
My first job was with the Glasgow University Archive services, a great introduction in to the world of archives and their wonders.
I have since completed research for other television programmes and love the opportunity this gives of sharing fascinating stories from the past with a wider audience.
I have even appeared on the television, in ‘The Boy Who Lived Before’, produced by Octoberfilms, the Matthew Pinsent episode of ‘Who Do You Think You Are’, and talking about the Women’s Land Army on a ‘Landward’ episode (BBC).
“Ruth is a real gem. She clearly has encyclopaedic knowledge about the areas where she does her guiding. She took me and two friends for a 90 minute tour of the Old Town in Edinburgh. We learned so much! […] A fine way to spend time in a great setting. All down to Ruth!”
